Abstract

The aim of study is investigation of sintering temperature and hot cross-rolling on physical, mechanical and microstructural properties of Al-30 wt% B4C. The mixed powder (Al and B4C) was sintered by hot pressing at 550, 600 and 650 °C and was preheated at 500 °C for 20 min for hot cross-rolling. For characterization, density measurement following Archimedes principle, microhardness, XRD and FESEM was performed. Performing hot cross-rolling process can lead to decrease the size of B4C and uniform distribution. The results showed that the density and hardness of hot-pressed samples with increase in sintering temperature were increased. Also, after hot cross-rolling, the density and hardness of the samples were increased from 2.35 to 2.64 g/ cm3 , and 101 to 136.8 Vickers, respectively. Furthermore, the fracture toughness increased from 7.5 to 13.8 MPa m1/2. The sintering temperature at 650 °C and performing 25% hot cross-rolling led to a composite with the highest density.
