The aim of present work is to enhance thermal insulating ability of nonwovens by surface coating of needled
fabrics with various types of ceramics. Silica (SiO2), alumina (Al2O3), silicon carbide (SiC) powders together
with SBR latex and wax as binders was used as coating components. Coated samples of needled nonwovens
were prepared. Thermal conductivity of samples was measured using guarded hot-plate principle. It was
found that silicon carbide coated samples exhibited higher insulating ability than samples coated with the
other ceramic powders. As far as binders are concerned it was concluded that samples treated using latex
binder performed better thermal insulation properties than wax treated samples.
