Abstract

Shape Memory Alloy (SMA)-based Superelasticity-assisted Slider (SSS) is introduced as a way of exploiting the advantages of sliding isolation and superelastic restoration. The structure of the Isolation System (IS) is then characterised. Practical numerical modelling and computer simulation are detailed based on the application of SAP2000 program, which is the well-known software in the field of structural earthquake engineering. Seismic performances are evaluated through extensive nonlinear time-history analyses. A set of seven natural and artificial accelerograms is used to evaluate the seismic performances in terms of base shears, story drifts, accelerations, and IS displacements. Restoring capability is examined for a database of 222 far- and near-field ground motions. Simple structure, alternative configurations, alternative forms of construction, more freedom in design, superelasticity-assisted hysteretic behaviour, insensitivity to variations in the frequency content of ground excitations, and independent restoring mechanism are defined as the most important superiorities of SSS, suggested also as an engineering solution to make the seismic isolation technology practical in Iran.
