Abstract

The growth of the world's population and the reduction of non-renewable energy resources have prompted engineers and architects to replace passive methods of providing comfort with active methods in the construction industry, which is one of the most consumed sectors. In this way, the facade of the building can play an important role. Therefore, optimizing the facade of the building with new technologies is one of the most effective passive solutions for natural ventilation and thermal comfort. In this research, the effect of two types of two-skin facades - floor-to-floor and full-length facades - on cooling and heating energy consumption for a residential building located in Yazd city has been investigated. The proposed model for simulation is derived from the type of plans of Yazd city for residential apartment buildings. The data obtained from the Design Builder software showed that the floor-to-floor view (corridor) has a better performance in the hot seasons of the year than other conditions, while the overall view reduces the heating load to the minimum possible level. According to the obtained results and to achieve the optimal condition in the entire exponential year, two shells were proposed to operate as a corridor in the summer and as a whole in the winter.
