چکیده

“Developing General English Proficiency through Reading: A Course for University Students” focuses on the teaching of English as a foreign language to students at universities and institutions as well as general readers. It assumes a pre-intermediate previous knowledge of English. The book is authored with pre-specified objectives in order to improve certain language skills, including reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. Considering that a majority of the books on general English address limited aspects of second language skills, mainly reading comprehension, this volume aims to integrate different aspects. A brief explanation of different sections of the book follows. The book is organized around 10 chapters. The readings are chosen from among the topics of recent interest. Each chapter starts with some topic preview questions. The aim of these questions is to stimulate prior knowledge and increase understanding because they focus attention on specific or significant facets of content. It gives an idea of what it is about without reading the main body of the text. It also gives an opportunity for students to discuss the topic and connect it to their real-life experiences. This is followed by vocabulary preview. The vocabulary items presented in this section are chosen from reading texts and ordered alphabetically. The aim is to practice and use these words in the contexts before encountering them in the passage. This section is followed by the reading passage. Each passage is organized around 6-7 paragraphs. The passages are designed and chosen in a way to present general information about the topic without delving into detailed content. In the next sections, there are some true/false and multiple-choice questions that aim to assess students’ comprehension of the reading passage. A cloze test is also provided. The readings in the cloze test were the paraphrased form of some paragraphs of the main passage. The aim is to practice and retrieve the
