Abstract

In the present investigation, the combination of a single pass hot-pressing and two passes of accumulative roll bonding was employed for fabrication of the 7075 aluminum based metal matrix composite. For this purpose, as received strips were cut into desired dimensions and after surface treatment, 0.8 vol. % SiC particles were uniformly dispersed between the four strips. Afterwards, a single pass hot pressing and 2 passes of accumulative roll bonding were carried out at 640 K. The microstructure and mechanical properties of processed samples were evaluated by OM, SEM, EDXS, XRD, tensile testing and micro-hardness measurements. Microstructure observations clearly showed that after single pass hot pressing and two passes of accumulative roll bonding, the reinforcement particles were dispersed uniformly in the matrix and perfect bonding is achieved between matrix and reinforcement particles. The results of tensile testing revealed that the tensile strength of processed composite is 2.1 time higher than the tensile strength of as-received material. It was deduced that the dislocation strengthening and grain refinement are the main strengthening mechanisms.
