Abstract

Microencapsulation of n-nonadecane with sodium alginate as shell was carried out by melt coaxial electrospraying. This approach has the potential to be a new type of vehicle for encapsulation phase change materials. The influence of shell concentration, the flow rate of core and shell material, the working distance and applied voltage on the microencapsulated phase change material have been studied. All the encapsulated nonadecane are nearly satisfactorily spherical. The microcapsule size can be controlled by adjusting the flow rates of different solutions. N-nonadecane/Alginate microcapsules (~ 30 µm) were successfully produced. FTIR result has presented the proofs of successful melt coaxial electrospraying of PCMs. The study of the nonadecane encapsulation reveals that the melt coaxial electrospray method cans encapsulate PCMs in the alginate microcapsules.
