Abstract

Single fiber tensile testing and microbond testing were used to benchmark the influence of alkali concentration in the fiber extraction process on the performance of Typha Australis natural fiber for reinforced epoxy resin composites. Typha fibers are new lignocellulosic fibers that obtained by chemical retting from the leaves of a plant called Typha Australis. They were characterized by single fiber testing for strength and modulus. Also, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of Typha fiber in epoxy resin was measured using the microbond test. The results of the single fiber tensile testing demonstrated that thefibre strength improves with increasing the alkali concentration to 3%w/v. The value of IFSS obtained in Typha fiber/epoxy is comparable to other polymer with natural fiber reinforcements.
