Abstract In this paper, slow light properties in a line defect photonic crystal waveguide formed by adding circular silicon rods in the first row of elliptical air holes is investigated. Group velocity And field distribution are calculated by using plane wave expansion and finite difference time domain (FDTD) method respectively. Numerical results shows that by changing the radius of the circular silicon rods the group index, group velocity dispersion and bandwidth of slow light can be improved.
